subject abstract

Where is the heat?

This activity analyzes the behaviour of an electric motor producing energy under different operating conditions. In particular the equation <<electrical work = heat produced>> is studied under three different situations: a free-running motor in neutral; a motor lifting an object; a motor lifting and dropping an object. The experiment may be used either for discussing the principle of energy conservation and introducing the gravitational potential energy or for developing ideas about the First Law of Thermodynamics.
